Consolidating My Web Presence
I’ve been using the wonderful OMG.lol service for several months and I enjoy the ease with which it allows users to create and maintain home, now, and weblog pages.
Since I started using the service I’ve added more content and have been looking for a way to make the transition among the pages/sites more seamless—and under a single domain.
To do this, I decided to combine everything under one roof: the weblog. It supports posts, static pages, and free form file content for things like style sheets and Javascript.
Page | Location | DNS Alias(es) |
---|---|---|
Hello1 | mihobu.lol/hello | hello.mihobu.lol |
Now | mihobu.lol/now | now.mihobu.lol |
Blog | mihobu.lol | blog.mihobu.lol |
Uses2 | mihobu.lol/uses | - |
One nice side effect of consolidation is that I can bring a uniform look and feel (including navigation) to all the pages. I’m also still able to take advantage of the FontAwesome icons on my now page (or anywhere else on the site, really) which is also nice.
This addressing system also makes it easy for me to add more static content in a simple and consistent way. Here are a few examples:
Page | Location |
---|---|
Blog Roll | mihobu.lol/blogroll |
Web Rings | mihobu.lol/webrings |
Other Projects | mihobu.lol/projects |
One Challenge
I really wanted mihobu.lol to take you to my hello page and mihobu.lol/blog to take you to the latest blog post, but the weblog.lol service doesn’t provide a way (yet) to do the latter. (Maybe I can convince Adam to add this feature!)
Styling and Navigation Updates
Consolidation has also given me the opportunity to restyle my site from the ground up, learning to use some newer (to me, at least) CSS features like flexible box layouts, viewport-based font sizing, a hamburger menu system that works well on small screens.
I’ve enjoyed making this round of updates and I’ve learned a lot in the process. Please let me know if you spot any errors or have suggestions!
Notes
-
I call my Web Page my “Hello” page because it is how I introduce myself to the world online.
-
My uses page is inspired by and a combination of numerous “Uses,” “Everyday Carry,” and “Tech I love” pages I’ve come across.
