Walking the Breakwater

If you’ve been following along you’ll know that I was in the Cleveland area for most of last week. While there, we went out to Headlands Dunes State Nature Preserve, which is adjacent to Headlands Beach State Park. The Dunes are situated near the mouth of the Grand River and there is a long breakwater with a lighthouse.

We walked along one of the marked trails through the dunes, past the old lighthouse and onto the breakwater that protects the channel. We were not the only visitors who came to climb the huge concrete blocks to reach the tip of the breakwater that day. Some, like us, were there for the adventure and the view on that Sunny Saturday. Others were there with their poles and tackle, focused on their task. The fishermen—I didn’t see any fisherwomen—went about their business unbothered while we tourists chattered and took selfies.

I use the word “tourist” because that is what we were that day, tourists in our own state. Sometimes we don’t do that enough. There are lots of interesting things close to home.

The breakwater is a good place to fish and to sightsee, but you have to climb over some very big rocks to get there.
