Happy Loliversary (Weeknotes

Highlights
Here are the highlights from week 4 (January 22–28) of 2024.
💩 Writing for Inc. magazine, Jessica Stillman reminds us that the late great Carl Sagan still has something to teach us.
🦁 I picked up How I Make Photographs by David Yarrow from the library this week. It is part of a “Masters of Photograhy” series. Books like this often retell a lot of the same advice, but there are also plenty of good nuggets and of course a raft of great photographs to be inspired by. I’m making notes, believe me.
📷 One of the pieces of wisdom that a lot of photographers share is to study and take inspiration from other photographers’ work. Glass and 500px both provide a way to browse photographs by the lens that was used and I like this because I’d like to be inspired by photographers who have made great photos using equipment like mine.
🍰 After reading Anne’s love letter to OMG.lol I realized I let my first loliversary go by without any notice. I became an omgloller back in November 2022, and as I recall weblog.lol launched around Christmas time a month or so later. I started using it right away and moved over a bunch of posts that had been previously published on another platform. (That’s why I have posts dating back to early 2022.) I figure my first “native” post must have been this one, dated January 28, 2023. Happy loliversary to me! [1]
😵💫 Work has been a real grind lately and I’ve been struggling to keep my commitments to journaling, blogging, and getting outside for some exercise. (The cold weather is not helping.) I need to try to do better next week. Think good thoughts for me.
Media Summary
-
I enjoyed reading “The Many Contradictions of Paul Giamatti” by Dan Kois in Slate. Mr Giamatti has been one of my favorite actors since he brought Pig Vomit to life all those years ago.
-
Finished watching Only Murders in the Building Season 2. That was a lot of fun. Looking forward to season 3!
-
I’ve heard good things about The Expanse so I watched the first episode. Nowhere close to being able to draw any conclusions, but I’m intrigued enough to keep going.
-
Wrapped up season 1 of Slow Horses and I gotta say that show took its good old time getting up to speed. But once it did it kept my attention. Now working my way through season 2.
Have a great week.
I’ve since moved this post over to my photography blog. ↩︎
