To Arizona (Weeknotes

Here are the highlights from week 9 (February 26 to March 3) of 2024.
Saguaro cactuses (or cacti if you prefer Latin) are big. And there are a lot of them.

A Month on the Road

✈️ I arrived in Tucson this week and will be here for the next four weeks. When I get back to Ohio it’ll be Spring. In the meantime I get to enjoy some warmer weather, get on a bike a little earlier than usual, and see a part of the world I’ve never seen before.

🌵 On Sunday I went with some friends on a hike among the giant Saguaro cactuses at the edge of Tucson Mountain Park. It was a beautiful day to be outside!

🥪 After our hike we had a nice lunch at JoJo’s Restaurant in downtown Tucson. While we ate we were entertained by Mik Garrison, Live Looper. If you’re in town stop in and drop a buck or two in the tip box.

Tidbits

🖥️ My job has been particularly demanding over the last several months and I’ve struggled to find my happy place there. But things are beginning to turn around. Spring is coming soon. Coincidence?

📷 I joined the Foto private beta for $5, for which they promise me pro features for a year at launch. I was able to reserve my usual username, although I don’t know what I need another photo sharing app for. Weird coincidence: the founder’s name is Michael Howard. Is it some kind of sign?

📂 Thanks to Marco for turning me on to Manila, a free MacOS app that lets you colorize folders from the context menu. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to enable the extension, but it’s working!

Media Highlights

🕷️ I finished reading Spaceman of Bohemia, by Jaroslav Kalfar. The author’s poetic prose was a welcome departure for me, although the story did not go where I expected and left me with many unanswered questions. I wondered right up to the very end whether Jakub was mad or dead, and Hanuš’s story did not quite satisfy. This is one of those books that’s more about the ride than the destination. I’m eager to see the film version.

🍷 I started reading The Drops of God manga series, which has been on my list since I watched the television adaption on Apple TV+ last year. After reading 3 volumes (of 44) it’s shaping up to be quite different so I’m happy to invest the time.

🔫 I sacrificed an hour and a half watching Freelance, an actual waste of time starring John Cena. Save yourself.

More pics and stories coming soon. Until then, have a happy week.
