Weeknotes: Week 19, 2023

Here’s what happened during the week of May 8–14, 2023.

🟰 I happened to notice this week that 2023 marks our 20th year as members of Human Rights Campaign. It’s more important now than ever before to stand up for equality for all.

🏳️‍🌈 Pride month is coming soon, and this Pride resistance flag made me laugh.

🔭 Robert McNees shared a very interesting thread about Cecilia Payne, whose research revolutionized our understanding of the composition of the universe. She eventually became Harvard’s first female full professor.

🎶 I had some work to do Sunday that took me several hours, and the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest was the perfect backdrop. It was upbeat, positive, and reminded me that there still are some things—like music!—on which we can all mostly agree! Joy.

🍸 My Sunday labor was bottling 17 litres of limoncello, almost all of it to be given away as gifts.

🤪 Netflix’s Unstable is another show that I’m enjoying more than I expected. It’s about imperfect people working through their shit, and it reminds me that we’re all in this together.

🥔 From the ”I can’t believe people are this dumb” desk: Potato Ty posted a video showing how he paints the potatoes with a “food-safe dye” that “looks like water” in order to give them that beautiful red color. This is obviously a joke, but after 14 million views there is apparently a significant number of people who think this is true. So much so that poor Ty had to publish a follow up apology. (It only got about 14 thousand views though, but I’m hopeful it was the right 14 thousand.)

📻 After almost two months off the air, I got my radio back from Yaesu and everything is just like new! Unfortunately, a massive solar storm slammed into North America this week, creating a veritable communications blackout on HF. The next week is looking better, though, and everything is looking good for Field Day weekend next month.

⚖️ I’ve been trying some new things, including getting a bit more active on the bicycle and playing pickleball lately. I’m down 20 pounds so far, so something is working. I hope I can keep it up.

Now Summary

Here are the things that were new on my NOW page this week:
