Weeknotes: Week 21, 2023

Here’s what happened during the week of May 22–28, 2023.

🖼️ I stumbled upon a Denver artist named John Hastings, who is originally from Cleveland and creates visual and musical art under the moniker RUMTUM. His web site says he received a BFA from the “Columbus School of Art and Design,” although it’s been known as the Columbus College of Art and Design since 1959. Seems sketchy, but I like the art and music.

✍️ I’ve been a big fan of the Caran d’Ache 849 pen (the clicky ballpoint, not the fountain pen) for a while now, but those Goliath cartridges are really terrible. There’s gotta be something better. [1]

📷 This week’s announcement of the new Leica Q3 has gotten me thinking about my own gear lately. I’m not ready to run out and spend anything close $6,000 but I am wondering if I’d be better served by a more compact alternative to the Fujifilm X-T4. The X-E4 is pretty attractive, but you haven’t been able to get your hands on one of those for a while now. Maybe Fuji will announce a new X-E5 with a 40MP sensor soon? A boy can dream, can’t he?

👰‍♀️ An old, dear friend asked me several months ago to officiate her wedding. I didn’t give it a second thought, of course, and agreed on the spot. I got ordained (thank you, Internet) and did my best to be prepared for the big day. That day happened this week, and even though it is not something I’ve done before—nor is it likely that I’ll ever do it again—the event went off quite smoothly.

📷 My daughter served as the wedding photographer, which was also a first for her. She recorded a very large number of frames so now it’s down to the selection and editing, which will be a big job. I hope to have some pics to share in the next few weeks.

🤦‍♂️ Since the wedding was in another state, we had to do the whole fly, hotel, rental car thing. Where oh where has all the service gone from the “service industry?” We received crappy (though not universally so) service in various forms from the parking lot/shuttle, the TSA, and our hotel. (smdh)

🛜 My ARRL Volunteer Examiner accreditation has been reinstated and is now valid to October 2027. Now I need to get out there and volunteer.
