Weeknotes: Week 23, 2023
Here are the highlights of the week of June 5 to June 11.
-
🥽 The socials were abuzz this week with Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWCD) and the announcement of Apple Vision Pro. Is it the beginning of a new era of spatial computing, or the launch of another VR headset that no one wants to wear? Time will tell.
-
🔑 I’ve been trying to embrace passkeys. It was frustrating at first, but I managed to get my
omg.lol
account working on both my desktop and my iOS devices. There were a few too many “magic email” prompts at first but things seem to have settled down now. -
🔑 Speaking of keys, I’m still (very slowly) getting my 1Password vault cleaned up. There’s so much junk in there!
-
📓 I bought an Amazon Kindle Scribe to replace my Kindle Paperwhite. The main reason was to give me a better solution for taking notes at the office. It seems to do a good job of recognizing and transcribing text. Sending notes and sketches out as PDFs is also very nice. I also like the larger screen for reading e-books. So far, I’m very pleased.

📃 CSS Day was this week, and all the chatter on the socials inspired me to get acquainted with some of the newer features — and brush up on some of the older ones! I picked up the new edition of CSS: The Definitive Guide, by Eric Meyer and Estelle Weyl and flipped immediately to the chapter on pseudo-classes and pseudo-elements for a refresher. Now I’m trying to get my head around flexible box layout.
-
🏳️🌈 I’ve also been playing around with CSS gradients to add some
#PrideMonth
flair to my Hello! page. Thanks to Josh W Comeau for this blog post, which inspired the idea. Thanks also to Sara Joy for sharing! -
🩹 I spent a few hours troubleshooting my dad’s Icom IC-7300 this weekend, after he reported that is was simply “no longer working.” Somewhere buried beneath scores of menu settings, we found and fixed the issue and he can go back to spending hours and hours in the shack chasing DX. My mother is very relieved.

🍷 On Saturday, we went to the Columbus Summer Wine Festival at McFerson Commons. The event operator also does a lot of food truck events so I was really shocked that there were no food trucks there! There were a few okay wines available, but it was mostly a lot of cloying sweet wines. (Don’t get me wrong, I tried most of them.) But there were also a lot of flavored seltzers, canned martinis, and the like, including this abomination:

-
🦞 After drinking all that cheap wine, we enjoyed lobster rolls from Cousins Maine Lobster at Budd Dairy Food Hall.
-
🏳️🌈 We closed the week with a visit to UA Pride. It rained, but turnout was good. We visited the booths, talked to people, picked up lots of SWAG, bought Say Gay cookies, and signed the
#ProtectOhioChoice
petition.
