Weeknotes: Week 27, 2023

Here are the highlights of the week of July 3 to July 9.
-
📷 I created an account on Glass and posted my first pics there. The user experience is sleek and intuitive, and it’s easy to browse photos by category, camera, and lens. I do not expect it to become an Instagram replacement, at least not in terms of the number of active users, and I’m eager to see whether it lasts.
-
📸 I also have a pro membership on Flickr and Makers Club membership on Hipstamatic, but I don’t have a clear strategy for how to use all of them yet—or if I even need them all. I need to figure this out.

🧨 July 4th was a travel day. My daughter and I flew to Minneapolis and spent a few nights visiting one of her friends at Carleton College. It was a work week for me so I spent most of the day in the hotel, but I did get out to see the town and campus area every evening. Skinner Memorial Chapel was one of the highlights.
-
👨💻 I spent a bunch of time messing around with my web presence here on
omg.lol
. I initially was trying to get everything to be accessible from a single host name, but that ended up being harder than it sounds. The upshot is that I now have separate primary host names for each of the main components: Hello, Now, and Blog. Nice and simple. -
👋 One of the big changes I made was to begin using the
Raw HTML
option for my Hello page. The main reason for doing this is that I wanted to be able to customize the list icons instead of being limited to only the FontAwesome ones. I learned a lot about CSS and some of the idiosyncrasies of theprofile.lol
service in the process. -
🧵 Despite not being a fan (to put it mildly) of Facebook and Instagram, I signed up for Threads to see what all the fuss is about. It doesn’t strike me as all that useful yet, but I’m interested to see how the app develops and whether interest in it builds or wanes after the initial hype.
Status Recap
Things I was reading, watching, listening to, and tinkering with this week.
Reading
- Wizard and Glass, by Stephen King A bit of a slog, compared with the first three books, but I’m working my way through it.
- Viewers defecting, writers striking … is streaming’s House of Cards about to fall? Aren’t we all experiencing Streaming overload?
- The Unparalleled Squareness of Pete Buttigieg Pete is a rare bright spot in the American political landscape
Watching
- Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Ep. S2.E1) Off to a good start
- Golden Years Light, sometimes funny movie based on a well-worn trope.
- Miss Sloane One of those movies I like to watch again and again
- The White Lotus (Ep. S1.E2) My daughter had never seen it, so we started watching together from the beginning. It holds up!
- Hijack (Ep. S1.E3) Not exactly good in the artistic sense, but entertaining
- Victor/Victoria A classic! How did they get away with making this moving in 1982?
- Glamorous (S1) Not entirely bad, but still pretty bad
Listening
- Living in the Library on Apple Music I like this playlist for reading.
