Weeknotes: Week 34, 2023

These are the highlights from the week of Aug 21 to Aug 27.
-
I added a new AWS Lambda Function to pull progress and ratings automatically from from my Goodreads profile to my Now page.

🏫 On Sunday we visited our daughter at the University of Cincinnati, which included a visit to Agave & Rye, one of my favorite taco joints. (If you go, the vegetarian Bang Bang and Vegan Green Goddess tacos are the awesomeness, and they’re huge!) After lunch we walked around campus and I noticed for the first time the beautiful Blegen Library. The building is covered in Art Deco ornaments and inscriptions, including the ones in the two photos on this page. It was once the university’s main library, but is now home to its Archives and Rare Books collections.

😌 My friend Kristen came to town for business and stayed with us for a few days. It’s always very comforting to spend time with old friends.
-
🍕 Speaking of comfort, good pizza is harder to find than one might think. This week we tried Papa Giorgios’s for the first time. It’s not new and it’s close by so I’m not sure why we hadn’t been there before. Regardless, it’s a “do over” and might be our new local favorite.
-
🍪 It’s called The Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe Ever and it just might be. They are the best that have come out of my oven in any case. The manner in which the recipe has been written has some flaws, so I’ll probably rewrite it at some point just to preserve my sanity. But the results are undisputed. Go ahead, give ‘em a try!

📺 Film and television highlights:
- Billions (Ep. S7.E3) - This show is so bad, it’s like severed heads rolling down the street; you can’t look away.
- A Tourist's Guide to Love - An entirely predictable but stress-free bit of entertainment, perfect at the end of a busy work week.
- Asteroid City - I admit I was a bit disappointed by this film. It was okay, but not as strong as some of Anderson’s other work.
- Finished Star Trek: Picard and all I can say is, “Wow, why did I wait so long to watch this?” Also, looking forward to the new series Jack Crusher, Borgslayer.

📖 Here are a few things I read and listened to this week:
- Counting the Cost of Education (The Economist Podcasts)
- “The Silver Bridge Was a Marvel of Engineering. Then It Came Crashing Down” by Colon Dickey (Popular Mechanics)
- “Dealers Are Turning Away Electric Cars As Demand Cools” by Alexa St. John and Nora Naughton (Insider)
- “What Happened to Wirecutter?” by Charlie Warzel (The Atlantic)
- Riley Keough on Growing Up as Elvis’s Granddaughter, Losing Lisa Marie, and Inheriting Graceland (Vanity Fair)
