Weeknotes: Week 36, 2023

These are the highlights from the week of Sep 4 to Sep 10.

⛱ It was a short work week because Monday was a holiday here in the US. A lot of people think of Labor Day as the end of summer, that’s selling ourselves short. We still have several weeks until the autumnal equinox and I’m not giving up without a fight, despite the cooler temperatures.

🩳 I read a post a while back in which the author raved about their Grip 6 belt. As usual I can’t remember who it was, but I did go and check them out. I bought two 1½-inch Element webbing straps and one Classic Buckle. I’m very happy with them. They’re simple, durable, and look very clean—exactly what I was looking for.

🚀 I signed on with NASA’s Message in a Bottle campaign to include my name with a poem written by the U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón on a mission to Europa. The poem and the participants’ names (over half a million so far) will be etched onto microchips mounted on the Europa Clipper spacecraft, which will travel 1.8 billion miles to the Jupiter system. Not many will ever see it (like this blog) but it’s cool to know my name will be out there.

🍳 I launched my latest vanity project this week, Recipes We Actually Use. It’s not to make money or to attract an audience—although I suppose that’d be okay. I really just wanted a way to collect and grow my collection of recipes somewhere I can find them again and share them with others. I’ve learned (and relearned) a TON about CSS in the process, so that’s fun too. There aren’t too many recipes in there yet, but I’m adding more all the time.

I got my first Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (2.71) this weekend. It’s based on a very tiny sample of games so it’s going to bounce around in the coming weeks as league play gets going.

🍻 My parents visited this weekend and we took them to the Columbus Oktoberfest. It’s not a huge event but there were plenty of people and more than enough bratwurst, sauerkraut, bier, pretzels, polka music, and Schmidt’s famous cream puffs for everyone!
