Weeknotes: Week 39, 2023

Here are the highlights from the week of Sep 25 to Oct 1.

I made some big changes to my weblog this week, most notably by adding a new landing page that combines my profile, what I’m doing now, and snippets of recent posts. I was inspired by Chris Coyier’s home page and I even went so far as to steal some JavaScript from him to get dark mode working here too. You don’t think he’ll mind, do you?

🗡 The feast day of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael took place this week—as it does every September 29th. They are the only three named angels to appear in the (canonical) texts of the Bible. Each has a specific role, something I just learned. Michael is a warrior, Gabriel a messenger, and Raphael a guardian or guide. I suppose I could have made those connections myself had I been paying attention during all those years of Catholic school. If you Google them, you’ll find a great deal has been written about them and they are usually depicted very artfully as Marvel-like superheroes. Funny.

My superheroes of the week are Snoopy and Woodstock, who have been stealing the show on my Apple Watch. They make me smile every damn time I look at it.

🥨 We went to Universal Studios Florida this week. We were visiting friends, we rode some rides, yada yada. But somewhere along the line my wife found an everything pretzel (just like the bagel) that came with this amazing curry mustard aioli sauce. I must find that recipe. If you have it or know where it is, please let me know! LOL

📰 According to The Guardian, there is a new print newspaper called County Highway that is “reinvent[ing] the art of reading slowly.” I don’t know if I buy that, but I did buy a subscription so I guess we’ll see.

🐶 I signed the Good Enough Guestbook, a cool project by some cool people that let’s you draw them a picture instead of the usual text message. The picture is sent to a thermal printer, which is streamed live on YouTube. Later, another cool person scans the pictures and they are immortalized online. Here’s my masterpiece coming off the printer:
Don’t forget folks, be excellent to each other.
