Three Kinds of Crappy (Weeknotes

This was a busy week. It seems that most weeks are busy these days. But this one was also punctuated by my feeling crappy for much of the time.
- I felt bad on Monday, mostly back pain. I remember wondering if I was dehydrated.
- I drank a lot of water and felt well enough on Tuesday to meet a colleague after work for happy hour.
- Bad idea. I felt lousy all day Wednesday as a result. Not hung over exactly, just… not right.
- Thursday was fine. It was a dry day so I cut the grass.
- I don’t know if it was the grass clippings, or mold, or the chill in the air, but on Friday all hell broke loose and I was sniffling and sneezing to beat the band.
- By Saturday morning (at around 3:00 AM) I felt so bad I couldn’t stand it and started pounding decongestants and antihistamines. I spent the day lying around like a slug, drinking tea and reading and watching television and generally going crazy.
- But it worked and by Sunday I was feeling pretty good again. I hope that’s all behind me.
In Sports
🏈 Week 3 of my fantasy football league treated me pretty well. I moved up to 2nd place (out of 10). Week 4 is looking pretty good too!
Good Thing of the Week
👱♀️ For decades, a photograph of a young woman named Lena (pronounced LEN-ah) was used as a benchmark for testing image compression algorithms. The image first appeared in a 1972 Playboy centerfold and has only somewhat recently been recognized as the symbol of sexism that it is. Earlier this year IEEE announced it would no longer accept submissions containing the image. Now, Morten Rieger Hannemose has given the world an “ethically sourced” alternative for the 21st century. I can only wonder what Lena must think of that.

📚 I posted about eight text/reference books that had a lasting influence on me, a follow up to an earlier post.
☔️ After a long period of drought conditions here in central Ohio, we had several days of rain this week. The drizzle provided the background for another video vignette. (photography blog)

Watching
🐒 The first couple of episodes of Bad Monkey aren’t great, but they’re somewhat entertaining. Will probably hang in there for a few more to see where this goes.
🛳️ I put the pilot episode of Doctor Odyssey on in my office while working one day and WOW am I glad I did. I’d really hate myself if I had spent that time actually sitting in front of the television. This has got to be some of the worst television ever.
🇲🇦 Finished season 1 of The Old Man. I read several comments online about how the season started strong then became slow and boring toward the end. I felt just the opposite, that the first few episodes were drawn out and that things got much more interesting in the final episodes. Either way, I’m looking forward to season 2.
🐴 Still catching up on Slow Horses
🇺🇸 Four years late, but finally watched A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote from 2020
🍫 Wonka is another attempt to tell the tale of the magical chocolatier’s beginnings. I’m generally not a fan of origin stories anyway, and because this one uses music from the original the comparisons are impossible to ignore. Timothée Chalamet, talented though he is, didn’t stand a chance against the great Gene Wilder.
Playing
🃏 I’m not sure who exactly among my Mastodon friends is to blame, but I downloaded Balatro+ from Apple Arcade, and there went several hours. Seriously, this is a really fun game that is as easy or as hard as you make it and will definitely come in handy when I need to fill time.
I hope y’all have a great week. Cheers!
