Weeknotes: Week 41, 2023

My family and I have been using Google Workspace to host our email and calendars since way back in 2006 when it was called “Gmail for your domain” and it was free. When they finally got around to charging money for it, I was okay with that because it provides value. But as I’ve become increasingly uncomfortable with the privacy issues related to using Google, and now that they are getting ready to raise the price, it seemed like a good time to...

...migrate the family to Fastmail for email and calendar. I’m pleased to report that migrating half a million email messages and a dozen or so calendars was not only super simple but also blazing fast! So far there have been no complaints of data loss or other issues. I’m happy with better privacy, lower cost, and a single app for both calendar and email.

🍲 Made some Cabbage Roll Soup over the weekend and it was yummy! I followed the recipe pretty much as it is posted in the link, but I may make a few adjustments.
-
🦷 My eldest daughter was home most of this week because she had three wisdom teeth extracted and needed a couple of days to recover and get back up to speed. It was nice to have her around.
-
📱 Back in week 38 I complained that the iOS 17 update had disabled my ability to assign custom sounds to text message notifications. I’m pleased to report that the issue has been resolved and custom sounds restored in iOS 17.1! Yahoo!

💉 It’s that time of year, so I went and got a flu shot this week, and they threw in a COVID-19 booster just for kicks. The combined vaccines didn’t knock me down so much as out. I slept A LOT at the weekend.
-
🦀 I tried a new potato chip flavor this week. It was not for me.
-
🧶 I picked up a crochet project that’s been sitting in a bin in my closet for many months. It seems like my crochet activity tends to coincide with the colder weather. In any case, I’ll try to share progress once there’s something to see.
Media Highlights
-
🤩 The Super Models was more interesting than I expected, especially considering it was 3½ hours long.
-
⚓️ Started watching The Terror on Acorn. This show is a few years old, but it caught my attention for featuring some high profile stars. Pretty good stuff if you’re into the based-on-fact-but-slightly-supernatural sort of thing.
-
👩🔬 My wife made me watch Lessons in Chemistry and it looks like it might be worthwhile. Definitely good enough to stick around for episode three.
-
💫 While my daughter was home we took the opportunity to take in some classic films that she’d never seen: Interstellar and Fargo. You betcha.
-
🌞 I don’t know why The Morning Show is still on, and I can’t tell you why I still watch it. But I do.
-
👎 Once I started watching Fall I just couldn’t stop myself. This movie is so bad and based on such a stupid premise that I can’t believe it got made. But then again I watched it so who’s the stupid one?
